I began to take daily walks around the 3.5-mile perimeter of Lake Merritt when my gym closed at the beginning of the Covid pandemic in early 2020. After a few years, and many photographs later, the lake began to reveal a different side of itself to me.
My purpose in putting together the images in this project is to document hidden social and geographical landscapes of Lake Merritt that are not always obvious to the casual viewer. Despite news reports of rising crime, homelessness, and pollution, Lake Merit is also an urban oasis where impromptu drum circles radiate ecstatic energies and Fellini-like characters saunter aimlessly. Even the lake waters have their magic and mysteries if you are lucky enough to be there on a good day…when the light is right.
