I took most of these images under Interstate 580 in Oakland and Emeryville Ca. around 2009. After attending a Richard Serra exhibition at SFMOMA, I began to see freeways as a utilitarian hybrid between sculpture and architecture. The Serra exhibition included several of his large metal obelisks – steel walk thru structures with rusted surfaces that were forged in Germany on an extraordinarily massive scale.
This freeway project a good example of how art influences life experiences, which in turn, influences art.
